Credit card reader

Credit card reader is also known as Point of Sale (POS) System. When the reader reads the magnetic strip of the credit card, the information of the strip is divided to separate fields like First name, last name, credit card no. and the date of expiry.

Before card readers became popular, recording of card transactions were done by the representative who was responsible for billing – The sales slip was manually completed by entering the details of the card. This slip was used by an account provider for ensuring that the required amount reached the merchant’s account. This method is risky, since it is mandatory to record the details accurately. This may not be always possible, since all manual work is prone to a small percentage of error. Nowadays, this problem is solved after credit card readers came into practice.

The history of POS is as follows –

ECR or electronic cash registers before the 1990s used proprietary software; not only that, their functionality too was limited. During 1973’s August, IBM introduced 3650 systems which were actually mainframes which had the potential to control POS registers (3663/ 3653) numbering 128.

After 1990s, standardization surfaced and the initiatives were JavaPOS and OPOS. In the 2000s, POS is internet based. The main beneficiaries of credit card readers are personnel employed in the hospitality and retail industries.

Portable card writer/reader is used along with a PC for all types of magnetic cards which includes credit cards. Separate power supply is not needed. While some readers have encoder/decoder chip, others do not have it. The data read is converted to digital form and communicated to the computer which executes the analysis. Access cards can also be read using some card readers.

It is better to buy Credit Card Processing Machines that have inbuilt printers. The price of such a machine is just $ 200. The machines that have thermal printers that are quick in their function cost $ 80 more. Better machines cost close to $ 250 and $ 275. Ask the manufacturer to let you know when there are offers associated with their products, so that you get the opportunity to buy the best product for a reasonable price. You would be happy to know that you can get quotes for no cost.

Some products have advantageous features like: noise-free operation and facility to use paper rolls that are so long that frequent change of paper rolls is no longer needed. At the same time, new technology products reduce the incidence of paper jam too; it is quite easy to load the paper rolls.

POS have definitely taken the burden off the shoulders of sales persons. Not only this, as the retail industry has developed immensely, nothing is possible if POS is not used. Day after day, newer technologies have caused marked improvements in the card reader systems. It was thus a long road for POS/credit card reader way back from pre 1990s to the years of 2000s and the improvements are remarkable.
