PREREQUISITES TO APPLY FOR A CREDIT CARD

If you are planning to apply for a credit card you should evaluate your credit history and determine your needs. If you have a good credit history that fetches you a good credit rating then go ahead and choose a credit card issuer. After this, log on to the issuer’s web site or go to the issuer’s office, fill an application form, go through the credit terms and finally sign at the bottom, on the dotted line. The approval process will take some time and you will be approved depending on the kind of credit card that you have chosen and your rating. If your credit rating is good, your card application will get approved very quickly.

The most common place where people go, to apply for a credit card, is to the bank. The reason for this is because banks offer a high level of security when compared to other issuers, particularly when the form is filled and submitted over the internet. Almost all of the banks offer almost the same credit terms and advantages and also charge the same interest rates and fees. Determining the card issuer or the bank whose credit terms are best suited to your requirement will be easy if you have these points in your mind:

  1. Check your credit report and history. Credit bureaus will provide you with a free copy of the credit report if any of your applications for credit were rejected 60 days prior to the day of your request. Else you will be charged $9 per report. Clear up any thing that you would like to and get any errors rectified before applying for the credit card.

  2. It isn’t necessary to have a bank account to obtain a credit card. Many people think that they should have an existing checking or savings account before applying for a card. Although this isn’t necessary, having an account in an issuing bank will surely help you in getting the credit card.

  3. Be completely honest while filling the forms. Providing the wrong or inaccurate information to the issuing bank will put you in a lot of trouble, especially if you have provided the wrong information regarding your personal information and paying capabilities. If the credit card company or the bank finds out about the inaccuracy in the details given by you, your application will be rejected immediately and this will reflect in your credit report.

  4. Make sure that you understand the terms of credit of your issuing bank. Ensure that you know the exact number that will be charged when you use the card to purchase any thing. Also find out how long the period of “zero interest” is in your issuing bank. Find out what the penalties are when you fail to make your monthly instalment.

  5. If you don’t get your credit card immediately, then try and build a good credit report for yourself by taking some short term loans or using your credit card to purchase stuff from the departmental store. Do this for a period of 6 months and get your self a good credit report. However, ensure that you make full payments before your grace period is over every month.
