THINGS THAT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE APPLYING FOR A STUDENT CREDIT CARD

For students and individuals who have just turned 18, it is time to start thinking about obtaining your 1st credit card. But, prior to taking the plunge in to the world of credit cards, you need to consider whether you are really ready to handle the additional financial responsibility of accessing funds which you haven’t yet started to earn.

Obtaining your 1st credit card is a huge responsibility since it is very easy, especially in the beginning to reach your maximum credit limit. Using the credit card to pay for your purchases may desensitise you from the true value of buying because you will be just swiping a plastic card instead of paying with notes and coins. This will lead to a huge amount of debt without even being noticed by you. One fine day you will see your credit card bill and not even remember where all the money was spent.

Think about how you have handled money previously. If you have walked around with an empty wallet most of the time, it means that you usually spend all your money as soon as you get it. This indicates to the fact that you will most probably spend more than you can afford and get in to credit card debt very soon. If you have taken loans from family or friends, try and remember how quickly you were able to repay it back. If you delayed the repayment due to expenses of your own, mostly unneeded ones, then you are not ready to handle the financial responsibility of obtaining a credit card.

If you are working, part time or full time, then make sure that you spend only that much which can be repaid by you as quickly as possible, most preferably within a month. If you postpone the repayment to your next pay check so that you will be able to purchase some thing else now, then you will have a huge credit card debt most probably within 2 months of obtaining it. If you are studying and are not able to work part time, then talk to your parents and find out how much they are ready to pay. If you make purchases and your parents are not ready to pay then you will get a bad credit report which is very bad at this stage, since you will not get any loans in the future.

You are ready to obtain a credit card when you can resist impulse buying. You should also check your bank statements frequently, so that you know where your money is going. This helps you to cut down on excessive spending that is unnecessary such as spending on magazines and fast food.

There are cards that are particularly designed for students. These cards fit the budget and needs of students. With this card you can either build yourself a good credit report or indulge in excessive spending and get stuck in credit card debt for a very long time.
